Almost all the American cities suffered as a consequence of the Occupation, but the three that stand out are Washington, where the National Guard and other units held out for days, forcing the Treens to fight for the city block by block; Salt Lake City, home of the U.S. arm of the I.S.F.; and Atlanta.
Atlanta was almost untouched by Black Sunday and the subsequent fighting, and two years after the Occupation began, it was almost back to normal; albeit under the martial law of the Treens and their robots. Instead, it was the Great Uprising of 2005 that ended in the complete destruction of the city.
Nowhere else in the Northern Hemisphere was the Uprising more closely fought than in Atlanta. The Treen presence at that time was relatively light, and so the Uprising very nearly succeeded. It was only with the arrival of re-inforcements of millions more robots from Venus many days that the Uprising was finally crushed. And the Mekon decided to make an example of Atlanta.
No one knows how many were killed that day when the telezero projector was used in anger for the first time in over two years, but the city and its surroundings were obliterated. The very concrete itself was vapourised.
Now the debate has begun : how should Atlanta be rebuilt? For rebuilt it will be: the North American administration and the people of North America are determined of that. But the style and layout are still being thrashed out - nineteenth century, twentieth, or twentyfirst? Each has its advocates. But it is looking at the moment as if the final result will incoporate examples of each ... but how is still yet undecided.
